Growing Opportunity: Poultry Project Expanded at Ngamo Primary School

We’re delighted to share an inspiring update from Ngamo Primary School, where the existing poultry project has been successfully expanded. Thanks to the support the generosity of an Overseas Adventure Travel traveler, the school purchased 55 point-of-lay hens to boost egg production and strengthen income generation.

Due to the long journey on rough rural roads and extremely high temperatures at the time of delivery, not all of the birds survived transit. However, thirty-four healthy hens are now thriving at the school, and egg production has already begun, a testament to the care and commitment of the teachers and students.

Egg production started on the 6th of October with just 3 birds, and to date 28 hens are now actively laying, with the number increasing each day. So far, 210 eggs have been collected, with a total value of USD $28, and the school has already seen steady improvement in both the size and quality of the eggs. The school is hopeful that all hens will soon be laying, and once all 34 are in full production, with the aim of each hen laying one egg per day, Ngamo Primary would be able to collect just over one tray of 30 eggs every day and sell this at $4, creating a reliable source of both nutritious food and consistent income for the school.

Importantly, a further positive solution is already in motion to replace the lost layers and reach the originally intended numbers. The nearby Ngamo Livestock Farm and Vocational College is currently acquiring an incubator, and discussions are underway to grant Ngamo Primary access to it. This will allow the school to hatch its own chicks at no cost in the future, ensuring they can easily increase their flock whenever needed and making the project even more sustainable and resilient.

The school community is incredibly proud of this progress and deeply grateful for the support that made it possible. What began as a small school initiative is growing into a long-term opportunity! Delivering nutrition, education, and empowerment for the children of Ngamo Primary School.
