.
TOTAL SNARES REMOVED TO DATE SINCE THIS
PROGRAMME COMMENCED IN APRIL 2017: 104,066

The de-snaring teams worked hard in the quarter first of 2024 in response to high poaching pressure as poachers sought to take advantage of the proximity to the park boundary of the main wildebeest and zebra migration. The team membership is now on rotation from a pool of vetted ex-poacher Community Conservation Bank (CoCoBa) members which is an effective way for sharing the benefits among wider community members building stronger relations with the Serengeti National Park Authority.

The Serengeti De-snaring Programme is a joint project between Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) and SENAPA INVESTORS (a group of committed tour operators). The programme employs ex-poachers from the local community, approved by TANAPA, who provide detailed local bush knowledge. It plays a crucial role in reducing the number of snares in the Serengeti National Park, which kill or maim hundreds of wild animals each year. TANAPA manages the teams, FZS provides technical and logistical support with funding coming from a consortium of donors including the SENAPA INVESTORS the Lion Recovery Fund and other individual donations..
